Visiting the organisations that support the movement for justice for the Sewol ferry tragedy made me realise the suffering in this world and how corruption and favouritism for the higher classes ultimately leads to downfall. Every place we visited shared the same opinion of how their only aim was to find out the truth behind the tragedy, to exercise social justice in society and remember the victims and respect them, not labelling them as abandoned anymore. The only motivation for them to run their organisations was to help spread an educational agenda so that students like us can remember the tragedy faced by the victims and their families and close ones. As learners, we need to understand the importance of the revelation of truth and not let power take over justice. We are the voices of the world; we need to make a difference. Talking to the victims' parents gave me the strength to stand up for their fundamental right to know the truth. Empathising with them made me realise how cruel and heartless the world has become and how their suffering and emotional damage must have taken immense courage to overcome. The fact that so many organisations are working towards this cause gives us time to think about how we can contribute and help them achieve their goals. Witnessing the classrooms and staffrooms and reading through the messages written by students for the victims was a heart-clenching experience for me. That experience made the tragedy not just a shipwreck on an April morning, but it humanised the people there. Before visiting the place, every article I read only spoke about the victims in numerical figures and not as somebody's daughter or son. But the experience in the classroom sensitised me to the fact that each one of the lives there was just like me, and they did not deserve whatever happened to them. This raised an emotion of wanting to help them out in any way possible, and I believe we can bring them justice if we’re all united. We cannot let the victims and their families be abandoned; we cannot let history repeat itself.
